The search for Atlantis, from the pyramids of Egypt, deep into the equatorial region of Africa is explored on this website. Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya, the two tallest mountains on Africa, appear to be the mythical Pillars of Hercules, after which Atlantis is named from the Greek "atlantes"
In the "Timaeus", Plato recounted a conversation between Egyptian priests and Solon. According to this source, Atlantis was an island beyond the Pillars of Hercules. Its people were powerful and warrior like and overran the Mediterranean region about 9,600 BC (9,000 years before Solon). Previously, it has always been assumed that the all-important Pillars of Hercules lay either side of the Strait of Gibraltar. But is this a correct assumption? Hercules is a constellation in the northern heavens, conjunct the sidereal constellation of Scorpio, and close to Libra, Virgo, Bootes and Orphicus. With the progression of time, it appears to have moved south of the position it occupied millennia ago. According to Greek mythology, out of the great void which was at the beginning of time, came forth the Titans. They were the elder gods of Greek mythology who were a race of giants and, their children were the Olympians who were headed by Zeus. In the eventual war between the two groups, the Olympians defeated their parents. Atlas, like Zeus, was a child of the Titans. However, in the war which raged between the gods, Atlas had made the unfortunate decision to side with the elder gods. As punishment for the betrayal of his Olympian generation, Atlas was ordered by Zeus to hold up the pillars of the world separating the celestial spheres from the earth. Thus it is that the modern terminology of Atlantes is now used in classical architecture in reference to pillars of male figures supporting a larger structure. The plural form of Atlas is Atlantes: and so the civilisation of Atlantes was "born". Excerpt from Alison Moroney's book, Pathway to Atlantis, Sydney, (1998)
